Inside of Joe Reed's Locker Room
May 26th, 2013
"You certainly proved why you were deserving of that Code Red contract!" April Hunter, also known as the "Lady in Red," beamed with pride, patting a slow-moving Reed on the shoulder. "Nobody could have expected a rookie in the wrestling business to come in and dethrone Sally Talfourd in his first match! Diego de la Vega is wetting himself at the thought of having to defend his championship against you."
It wasn't easy but Reed was officially undefeated in Code Red, and taking out Talfourd wasn't an easy task. She was one of the living legends of the sport and Joe Reed pulled off the unthinkable in his debut match with the company. He had his sights set on big things but in the meantime, he'd relish in his victory, and nurse his wounds.
"Let me get as shower and we'll get out of here," Reed huffed towards April, using a white towel to soak up the sweat beads forming on his forehead.
Reed opened the door to his locker room and motioned for April to enter before him. She took one step in to the room and stopped dead in her tracks. Reed, threw himself in front of her, a habit of protecting the one with whom he'd loved, and took a few steps in before her. A trio of men in black suits were rummaging through the room, admiring some of Reed's personal items, before a fourth revealed himself, walking out of the bathroom, and wearing an oversized robe, obviously meant for Reed.
"Well look who it is!" The man reclined back in a desk chair, propped his feet up on the desk, almost revealing himself to April, and lighting up a cigar, blowing a puff of smoke up in the air. "Thanks for the robe. I didn't bring any clothes with me and after that shower, I need a little something to stay warm."
"What are you doing here?" Reed asked. "How'd you find me?"
"It's not everyday that a 6'9 monster of a man goes somewhere without drawing at least a little attention to himself! If you were trying to hide, I would have thought that staying away from a nationally promoted wrestling organization that just so happened to have one of their biggest events of the year," he said. "Your face has been slapped on every poster from here to California. You didn't honestly think you'd stay on the run for that long, did you? I mean, I always knew you weren't the sharpest tool in the shed but I thought maybe you'd have a little common sense in that oversized cranium of yours."
The man standing in front of Reed was Giovanni de Carlo, the ringleader and head of the world-famous crime outfit, the de Carlo family. Reed had become Giovanni's personal protector and bodyguard before deciding to branch out on his own. Giovanni ordered his henchmen to hunt down Reed and make sure he didn't walk again but they were largely unsuccessful, with Reed fending them off for as long as possible, until the police arrived right before they could finish the job. April Hunter happened to stumble across a homeless Joe Reed and took him under her wing, nursing him back to health, and the two eventually established a working relationship. She handled his day-to-day affairs and he protected her from the greasy, drunk and overweight men that would throw themselves at her after one of her shows.
"How long do you think you'd be able to say under the radar?" de Carlo asked. "You've been running now for what - six, seven weeks?"
"Who are these people, Joe?" Hunter asked with a nervous tone to her voice.
"We're family," Giovanni interrupted before Reed could speak. "That monster of a man standing beside of you would be nothing without me. It seems that he's forgotten all about family and decided that he'd rather take all the glory for himself. We don't take kindly to those turning their backs on us..."
"I didn't turn my back on anyone," Reed commented. "You don't own me now and you didn't own me then. We had an agreement that worked for us for the time being, but that relationship wasn't benefitting me any longer, so I cut the chord before you had the chance to drive that knife in my back! You know it was only a matter of time."
"Maybe," de Carlo shrugged his shoulders. "Maybe not. Either way, you didn't leave me much of an option. You're lucky to still have your kneecaps still in place."
"What is he talking about?" Hunter seemed confused. "You mean you know those people?"
"Know *these* people?" de Carlo and his set of henchmen laughed. "I'm the reason why he's isn't behind bars today! He was serving a life term..."
Hunter immediately took a step backwards from Joe Reed, and looked upon him with disgust. Reed's history wasn't something that he volunteered every day. Even with someone who was as close to him as April, he didn't like talking about his past. Truthfully, he was still a little bit cloudy on everything that had gone down. Giovanni's crew did a number on him, causing some short-term memory loss, which in turn, led him to forget about his past. He didn't seem to mind but seeing Giovanni twirl around in the chair in front of him brought back some painful memories that were suppressed deep within.
"Oh, you didn't tell her about your criminal background?" Giovanni scoffed. "I should have known better than someone like you would try and hide who you really were. Sweetheart, this man is a common criminal and should be spending the rest of his days in a cell, with his feet dangling off a twin sized bed."
“That can’t be true,” April cried. “Joe, tell me what’s happening here…”
“I used to work for this man. But this is all a big understanding! I don’t know what he’s doing here and what he wants with me now. I’ve paid him my debts and I’ve moved on with my life. He’ll be leaving any minute now.”
“Oh, I don’t think so,” de Carlo chuckled to himself, puffing smoke from his lungs. “I’ve got a little problem with you running around collecting paychecks here without paying me my cut. We had a little arrangement and I’m not comfortable allowing someone to break their contracts with me without paying the consequences.”
“I told you once and I’ll tell you again… I don’t owe you anything! My debt was paid to you a long time ago and anything that I’ve earned on top of that was gravy. I think you better leave before I’m forced to do something I regret!” Reed prepares for a physical altercation. “You don’t want that to happen… trust me.”
Giovanni smiled at the huffed-up Joe Reed, almost expecting that type of response from him. Before Reed met de Carlo that fateful night in that small New York cell, he wasn’t capable of harming a fly, and now, he was prepared to snap the neck of anyone who stood in between him and his goals. Unfortunately, his dealings with Giovanni were different than dealing with anybody else… and de Carlo was well aware that he held a special power over him. No matter what de Carlo did, Reed wouldn’t ever lay a finger on him.
“Now, now,” Giovanni whispered in his raspy tone. “We didn’t come all this way to cause trouble! I think you might want to reconsider what you’re saying here. Nobody is going to harm you. But the same can’t be said for her…”
“Over my dead body!”
The three guards walk towards April but Reed jumps in front of them, forcing them to hesitate, and look back to Giovanni for guidance. He waves them back.
“I believe we may have a few things to discuss, Joe…”

“A second week in Code Red Wrestling and another notch in the win column is inevitable. If Sally Talfourd couldn’t stop me then surely Leon Corbin won’t be anything more than dust in the wind.”
“It’s true that I don’t have the in-ring credentials of Terry Marvin or Eddie Phoenix, so I’m begging you to look right past me to your next match-up. I’m hoping that you’ll simply discredit me and hope that your experience is more than enough to get you through so you won’t have to put effort in to the match. That you can sleepwalk through the evening and the executives in Code Red Wrestling will simply move you right along to the main event scene and give you a chance at the World Heavyweight championship and Diego de la Vega.”
“I’m here to tell you that would be a massive mistake on your part and certainly not a road that you want to travel. While I may not have the resume as some of my counterparts in CRW, I make up for it by shear size and intimidation!”
“While you might be able to push and shove others around the ring on your way to another victory, you won’t be able to do that to me! I promise that you’ve never seen someone with my size, with my power, and my ability to run circles around anyone I’m in the ring with! Add to that the fact that I’m willing to do any and everything to walk away with the victory under my belt. I’d run through mountains for the chance to have my hand raised. I’d snap the neck of anybody, like a runaway chicken, who stood in my way for the ring announcer to call my name at the end of the evening. I’d take the head off of your shoulders if it meant that I’m another stop closer to my goal!”
“The majority of the CRW roster has had everything handed to them on a silver platter. Chance after chance has fallen in to your lap, and for the most part; you’ve failed miserably at each attempt. You’re the most despicable human beings that I’ve ever come across. Believe me, I know that I’m not a saint, and I’ve done things that I’m certainly not proud of… but the difference between the two of us is that I don’t have any qualms about owning up to them!”
“Despite how talented you are, I’m not going to let you embarrass me and derail my early start here in Code Red Wrestling. I’d like to say that I’m not gunning to actually injure you more than I’m trying to get a win, but that wouldn’t be true. I won’t hesitate to teach you a lesson! We work in a violent industry, and you’ve put yourself in harms way… and sadly for you, there won’t be anyone to rescue you! You’re like Lois Lane, dangling in the pathway of a runaway train, and begging for Superman to come and save you. In this case, there is one *major* problem. I’m Superman and I’m too busy stomping on your knuckles to have time to save you!”
“This a business, Leon. And it’s like the mafia – you only get out of the business when the business has used you up for all our worth! And in your case, I’m the godfather, pulling the strings behind the scene, and I’ve decided that after Face Off rolls around, you’ve officially used up all your usefulness… and your services will no longer be necessary in Code Red Wrestling! Like the trash that is overflowing and ready to be put by the curb, I’m going to stick you in the can, smash that lid over your head, and send you packing on the first truck that I can get my hands on. You’ll end up in some massive trash heap, which is exactly where you belong!”
“You can take comfort in knowing that you were simply another step in the elevator straight to the top floor for Joe Reed. You can rest easy knowing that you played a minor part in the Oscar winning movie of the “Crimson” one. You can rest assure that you were nothing more then a rung on a rusty ladder that was use to propel me to the next level that is the World Heavyweight Championship.”
“Leon Corbin, my name is Joe Reed… and I promise to leave you seeing crimson!”
