Biography/Upbringing/Influences
John grew up in a religious community on the outskirts of Tombstone, AZ, a group you'd probably call a cult. His father was the leader of the community, and tried to groom John in his image, even stifling his love of wrestling. They clashed all throughout his youth and into his teen years, to the point that John left the day he graduated high school and never looked back.
A young man with no plan, John eventually found a place in underground fighting, travelling from city to city, making just enough to eat and have roof over his head. He continued this way for years, eventually enjoying the carnage he caused. During a trip to Chicago for a fight, he caught the eye of a businessman who was in town for the weekend, Lou Manson. The two men struck up a friendship, and Lou convinced John to quit and come work for him up near The Badlands of South Dakota. Lou owned a funeral home, and he gave John a job as a gravedigger. Lou noticed John's love of wrestling, seeing him watch every week on TV, so eventually he convinced the big man to make a career out of his love. John had a bunch of tryouts for Midwestern Indy feds, but all of them were concerned about the level of violence he showed against other men trying out. Lou, when it looked like he couldn't find a promotion for his friend, heard of a new company being formed, Code Red Wrestling. He contacted management, and they were willing to give John a job. He then joined the initial CRW roster, taking his ring name from the job he did for Lou: Gravedigger (John wasn't too interested in taking the time to create a more original ring name).
Coming into CRW as an untested rookie, it was an up an down process for Gravedigger. He'd win some, lose some, but eventually found his footing, winning the Tag Team Championships with two different partners and the Anarchy Championship within months of the fed opening. His biggest break came when he faced Michael Dredge for the World Championship, but came up short. Digger was disliked by the fans at the beginning, but he grew into a fan favorite during this period. Ending the first season with a feud against Diego de la Vega, in which both men got a win with a draw in another match, things looked up for Gravedigger...
Season two saw Digger revert to his up and down trend from early season one. The early highlight was a split of matches with Brandon Garcia, but Garcia got the bigger win, getting his victory at a PPV event (As did Diego in season 1, a trend for Digger). His father, whom Digger thought was dead, re-emerged at this time, causing chaos for his son in an attempt to derail his career. Digger fought off the distraction, but his career had stalled...
Crucible was coming up, and Digger was ready to compete, to show he belonged. But times were about to change. Paired with Buck Dempsey, the two seemed headed to victory when Digger turned on the wrestling legend, costing the two of them their shot to win the tournament. That night was also when a group was formed, one that purported to be against the injustices and lies of CRW management. Veritas was born...
Digger's match performance stayed up and down at this point (he briefly held the Prime Time Championship during this time, becoming the first CRW wrestler to win three different title), but he was focused on his mission: to show the world the "corruption" of CRW owner Talon Wilkinson and his supposed friends on the roster, men such as Diego, Rex Evans, and Eddie Phoenix. Digger became obsessed with proving the "truth" as he saw it, and by focusing on his mission he started to lose big matches once again, ending season 2 with lossed to Eddie and Rex.
Digger was poised to make a major statement to kick off season 3, but CRW closed it's doors. He was furious, as his mission wasn't completed. He never proved what he set out to accomplish. A few months later he joined the SCW roster, but only lasted a few months. His heart wasn't in SCW at the time, so he just left one day, never returning. That seemed to be the end of his career.
Living like a nomad the last few years, CRW is back... and so is John Thomas. Gravedigger has been set aside. This is a new attitude... A new mindset. John doesn't quite know what to expect from his time in CRW during this go around...
